Less weight yet greater torsional stiffness.
Wheel suspension with a single-sided swing arm has a long tradition at BMW Motorrad. Compared to conventional suspension with two swing arms, a single-sided swing-arm enables a saving on weight with higher torsional stiffness at the same time and remarkably simple installation and removal of the rear wheel.
After the wheel bolts have been released, removal of the rear wheel is child's play - when changing tyres for instance. There's no need to touch the drive so that the correct tension of the toothed belt is retained for instance.
The broad design secures the eccentric rear wheel bearing so that the rear wheel is always correctly fixed in longitudinal direction. Rear toothed gear, toothed belt and front pinion are automatically aligned. The ideal combination of toothed-belt drive and single-sided swinging is unique in series production of motorcycles and its benefits make biking even simpler.
